Website/Webtool Onboarding

Familiarize users with new & existing site features

Summary

I worked in a team with Hewlett Packard Enterprise to develop the onboarding for their updated compatibility program, SPOCK. This required learning about a very complex system and jargon, and distilling it into an easily digestible form. At the time of the project, HPE had been regularly working with Purdue, and our results informed continuing work after our student group moved on.

Goal

Create an onboarding process that educates new users of SPOCK and promotes more efficient tool use by existing users.

Process

We dedicated a lot of time to understanding the SPOCK system as it exists, as we couldn't fathom onboarding for a system we couldn't understand. We spent a lot of time researching both SPOCK and other compatibility programs, as well as other examples of onboarding. We may have spent more time on research than was absolutely necessary, but once we started sketching out our ideas the rest of the process went quickly. We continued into a series of iterations following research with users who had knowledge of data storage and/or used the existing SPOCK system, changing our ideas and approaches based on the resulting feedback.

Contribution

I was the team lead for this project, and learned a lot about planning, time tables, task delegation, etc. It was a bit rough at the beginning, but my team was good enough to fill in the gaps I couldn't cover. I also played a role in mapping the existing SPOCK site for our analysis, and for designing our "build" onboarding process, as well as the integration of that same process into the combined final onboarding presented to HPE.

Sitemap

We inventoried and grouped each feature to better understand the vast array of features.

Layout Map

Each feature was mapped on the current layout, grouped into categories for focus during onboarding.

Testing

We needed to make sure that each tool was easily found, the tools' purposes were obvious, and that users of the previous system were able to transition into this new design.
